HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A fundraising effort by Colorado Mesa University‘s Hawaii Alumni Chapter group collected $10,000 to help Lahaina victims affected by last year’s wildfire.
The group led by Bronson Henriques, a 2009 Waipahu High School graduate, has turned the money over to the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.
CMU has a large population of former Hawaii residents.
Henriques said members of the group saw the fundraising in Hawaii and were wondering what they could do from there.
They hosted cooking classes with entrance fees going to the donation account and hosted a Hawaiian culture night at a restaurant in Grand Junction, Colorado.
CNHA just received the check and a spokesperson said the money is going to the Maui Wildfire Relief Program which is providing emergency rental assistance.
