An old video of an assistant sub-inspector removing his uniform after an argument with the husband of a BJP councillor in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli has gone viral on social media, sparking a row.
In the video, the assistant sub-inspector, Vinod Mishra, can be seen removing his uniform after a heated exchange with Arjun Gupta, the husband of BJP councillor Gauri Gupta, in Singrauli’s Waidhan.
Singrauli Superintendent of Police Nivedita Gupta said that the video was over eight months old and strict action was taken against the personnel, Vinod Mishra, for disrespecting the uniform.
She said that a dispute broke out between Arjun and Vinod over construction of a drain, following which Vinod got up and removed his uniform. The SP said that she had also ordered the stoppage of Mishra’s annual increment after the incident came to light.
She added that an investigation is on to find out who leaked the CCTV footage of the incident after eight months.
Vinod Mishra said that he had gone to the councillor’s house to discuss the ongoing drain construction in front of his house.
However, while Gauri and Vinod were discussing about the matter, Arjun allegedly told him several times that he would “strip Vinod off his uniform”, following which Vinod got angry and removed his uniform.
“He repeatedly kept on telling me that he would strip off my uniform. So, I removed the uniform and gave it to him,” Vindo said.
“I told him that I would start begging, but I wouldn’t be able to do the job, so I gave him the uniform. If I can’t get justice for myself, how can I do this job?” he said.
“I should not have reacted like this,” Mishra was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
He further said that his blood pressure had increased and he became unconscious after the incident.
The video was shared by the Madhya Pradesh wing of the Congress on X on Monday, who attacked the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav-led government over the incident.
“This is the power of authority…look at the threat of the BJP councillor…a uniformed man had to tear his uniform!! The level of policing in the state has reached zero! Crime is out of control, criminals are fearless and the police is helpless at some places and under pressure at others,” it said in the post.
“This viral video is being told of Waidhan police station of Singrauli, where a policeman got so upset due to the pressure of BJP councillor that he tore his uniform! That means both the condition and direction of the Home Department have deteriorated under the influence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav!” the Congress said.
“How will the public get justice, when the police itself has to tear its uniform!” it added in the post.
